A significant factor in dry eye is something called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). This is where one or more of the glands in your eyelids becomes clogged by hardened oils (meibum). Meibum is responsible for sitting on the top of the tear film and prevents the evaporation of the underlying liquid layer. At Eyedro, we use an instrument called MiBo Thermoflo. This instrument applies continuous controlled heat with ultrasound gel, helping to unclog these glands by softening the hardened oils. This can then help restore the oily layer in your tear film. A good quality tear film is important for the protection of the eye and can help prevent certain eye conditions. If MGD is left untreated it can lead to the eventual drop out of these glands, which means the gland is lost forever.
